With funding from the Department of Aging and Adult Services, and in collaboration with the San Francisco Food Bank, Chinatown CDC launched the Food Pantry Program in July 2007, and has purchased food for 190 tenants who live in Chinatown’s SRO (Single-Room Occupancy) buildings under Chinatown CDC’s management.
Two tenants, Pei Ying Zhu and Ai Mei Zhang, arrive each week without fail at 1 p.m. to help staff unload the truck. The food distribution is special to Chinatown CDC because many tenants are willing to volunteer. The elderly and teenagers work side-by-side and get acquainted at the same time.
Tenants who are physically unable to pick up food are not forgotten. The youth pack some bags and hand-deliver the food to them every week.
If you company has an Employee Volunteer program, we can make arrangement for 10-12 employees to help us distribute food on a Friday afternoon. Call our main office @ 415.984.1450 for more information.
